Parts of this low, one-and-one-half-story gambrel-roofed house, reputed to be the oldest residence in Charlestown, may date from as early as 1685. Built by a member of the Stanton family of original settlers, the house retains the name of an in-law, Nathaniel Sheffield, to whom it was deeded in 1753. Its large stone chimney, off-center entry, and shingled mass make it a clear example of the early architecture of this area, but recent alterations and large ell additions have changed the original plan of the house.
