Guarding the entrance to the recreation area are a pair of wildly asymmetrical gatehouses by Scranton architects that recall Frank Furness's railroad buildings in their machinelike inflection to task—sheltering the gatekeeper while assertively controlling the road. The massive wood brackets convey the heritage of the National Park Service's roots in the west and the ongoing influence of Robert Venturi in the east.
