The subdued red brick aquarium, the companion building to the conservatory, is to the side and a little behind it. Access is gained through an exuberant baroque doorway surmounted by a pediment of carved dolphins. A marvel in its time, housing both saltwater and freshwater fish and a variety of marine life beneath a vaulted ceiling laid with sea-green Pewabic tile, the aquarium is still remarkably intact, but closed in 2005. Friends of Belle Isle Aquarium is attempting to reopen the facility.
