High on a hill overlooking Munising Bay, enrollees of the 3613th Company, Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), Camp Evelyn, under the supervision of Harry Person and Con Liephart, built for the Hiawatha National Forest a ranger station office, dwelling, garage, oil storage house, and warehouse to standard Forest Service plans 68a, B-72, 74, 23, and 14. These plans were intended to create institutional buildings that would fit into their small-town surroundings, in this case Early American, rather than rustic ones. The specifications called for paint colors in “colonial ivory, with silver gray and colonial green trim,” and a chimney of local brownstone.
