Rapid construction of this forty-story skyscraper launched the Inner Harbor redevelopment effort and marked the transition between that area and the Central Business District. Intended as a signature building and a new consolidated corporate headquarters for USF&G Life Insurance, the tall, slender tower clad in Spanish pink granite sits boldly perched on its own raised plaza encompassing a city block. The fine materials continued on the interiors, which featured extensive use of English brown oak and rosewood. Now called Transamerica Tower, it retains its title as the tallest building in Maryland.
