Among the handful of Massachusetts houses influenced by the International Style before the arrival of Walter Gropius in 1937, the Field House displays Ned Goodell's regional response of the latest European forms and ideals. The house, a T shape in plan with a double-height octagon at the crossing, is entered from a corner of the octagon between wings for service and for children; the wing for adults is opposite the one for children. Goodell used fieldstone and color to blend the building into the suburban landscape, another characteristic of early modernism in Massachusetts, as opposed to the pure white boxes of European models. A slightly later house (1940) by Goodell stands nearby at 102 Sudbury Road.
