The fourth Congregational church on this site, the Wellesley Village Church was constructed in 1923, following the burning of its predecessor. Carrère and Hastings of New York (who were also architects for Elm Bank [DV1] in 1907, the Baltzell country house nearby in Dover) provided a Classical Revival design based on the early-nineteenth-century work of John Holden Greene of Providence, Rhode Island. A monumental Doric portico and multistage tower and steeple dominate Wellesley Hills Square (WL3). The austere and monochromatic vaulted interior reflects the patterns of colonial meetinghouses. The town's earliest graveyard lies behind the building.
