The home of a lumber merchant and housewright, Oliver Hastings's residence speaks to his business experience. The square massing, broad panel pilasters, and monitor roof resemble other Cambridge houses of midcentury, including some that Hastings built. The distinctive features here are the central two-story, semi-circular projections on the south and east facades with ironwork balconies that recall English Regency designs known only through architectural pattern books. For many years the residence of Episcopal Bishop William Lawrence, who made additions to the rear, the house now provides housing for faculty at the adjacent Episcopal Divinity School.
