1869, Ware and Van Brunt. 165 Mount Vernon St. at Brimmer St.

For their urban residential work, Ware and Van Brunt often featured a lively use of brick paneling in various geometric shapes and Néo-Grec ornament, such as sandstone doorway surrounds. The use of this ornament is particularly effective in the house for Dr. Charles E. Ware, an uncle of architect William Ware. For a corner lot backing onto River Street (now David G. Mugar Way), the side elevation steps back to allow for a small yard and a second entrance, possibly for a doctor's office. A high basement of rusticated sandstone and a mansard roof add to the building's imposing character.
