The group of related houses at 163 (originally, 165) Marlborough Street and 326–328 Dartmouth Street (NRD), completed in 1871, represents one of the Back Bay's most urbane expressions of the French Academic style. Each elevation is a study in symmetry and refinement, limned in red brick and warm, yellow-beige Nova Scotia sandstone. The interrelationship of the three houses is physical as well as visual; the center house on the Dartmouth Street side is T-shaped in plan: two rooms wide across the front, it narrows to a single room at the rear to accommodate its larger neighbors. The Cushing-Endicott House displays handsome composition, where symmetrical bays topped by double dormers flank an inset columned porch surmounted by ironwork balcony.
