One of the earliest Postmodern buildings in the District of Columbia, this mixed-use structure attempts to address its surroundings and blaze a path between colonial and Federal styles. By means of an irregular roofline and recessed elevations, the building differentiates the commercial and residential functions. The commercial space is announced by a single asymmetrically placed classical column and entablature, a nod to the Biograph Theatre to the east. This motif is repeated at the corner and on the 29th Street side at the entrance to the apartments above. Oversized fanlight windows are punched into the gables, and a bowl-shaped bite has been taken out of the parapet at the third floor on M Street. While providing an unusual treatment, the firm of Martin and Jones created a modern structure compatible with a complicated array of architectural neighbors.
