Located in the 120-acre City Park, landscaped by Royston, Hanamoto, Alley and Abey, the recreation center is a combination of rectangular bays organized around a tall, gabled, full-length galleria with clerestory windows above flat roofs. A fountain plaza entrance capitalizes on panoramic views from the hilltop site. The building veneer is square red brick set in sailor courses, with soldier courses around the windows. A round balcony in the center of the galleria has a curved staircase descending to locker rooms beneath a cross gable in the concretetiled roof. The swimming pool is composed of three curved shapes on different levels connected by waterfalls. A rock climbing wall was hand built by Mount Everest climber Edward Webster.
