In 1913 plans were begun to relocate the Fairmont State Normal School from Fairmont Avenue to a new site offering more room for expansion. An eighteen-acre tract was purchased, and in 1915 construction began on the Administration Building, now called Hardway Hall. Although a number of buildings have been added since, Hardway remains the architectural and figurative centerpiece of the college. In 1930 the institution was renamed Fairmont State Teachers College, and in 1943 it became Fairmont State College.
