This museum commemorates the surveying exploration that George Washington, then thirtyeight, made down the Ohio River in the fall of 1770. The museum is housed in one of two yellow brick Mission Revival buildings covered with hipped roofs of red tile, both built in the early twentieth century in conjunction with Ohio River Lock 22. The Sayre House, a twostory log house with half-dovetail notching, was built in 1875 on Cow Run in the southwest part of the county. The house was moved here in 1983 to serve as part of the museum complex.
