Southeast of downtown, on land that slopes toward Tuscarora Creek, is a small historic district, centered on the intersection of South Water and East John streets. The area contains a number of the city's earliest houses, most of which are privately owned and not currently in prime condition. However, two are wellrestored museum houses.
