Built for an Episcopal congregation, the church was sold to the Methodists in 1843. It is a typical Virginia Protestant church of the early nineteenth century in its rectangular mass indicating its function as a preaching hall. The spare classical detailing of the cornice and the windows that light a rear balcony are in keeping with the ideals of the early republic's architecture. Above the gabled facade with its two entrances stands a large polygonal louvered bell tower that once had a steeple.
