South Sycamore Street leads from downtown Petersburg to the prosperous southern suburb of Walnut Hill, which lies across the ravine cut by the stream, Lieutenant Run. The neighborhood represents the shift from downtown to the suburbs from the first decade of the twentieth century. The area is bounded by parkland on the west and Petersburg National Battlefield (DW42) to the east. Most of the architectural trends and styles of the early twentieth century, especially Colonial Revival, are represented here. Many of the streets are named for Virginia plantations.
