The I&GN Railway Employees’ Hospital Association built frame buildings at this site in 1884, later replaced by this red brick Georgian-styled facility. A raised basement topped by a double stringcourse forms the base, with two floors above and another stringcourse to define the parapet. The horizontal emphasis is countered by a slightly projecting central bay with an elegant small portico with an arched pediment. The hospital is the sole remnant of the railroad compound that included office buildings, a large roundhouse, several generations of depots, and work and storage shops. This once-expansive railroad headquarters drove the Palestine economy for many decades.
