As new developments north of downtown on North and N. Mound streets attracted prosperous families, others gravitated to the hills west of town, to Irion Hill and Forbes Hill. Attorney Junius (June) C. Harris acquired a thirty-acre site of farmland on Forbes Hill so he could move his family from the downtown house Diedrich Rulfs had renovated for him in 1893. Rulfs designed most of the houses in this western area and the new north districts. This scheme was unlike Rulfs’s others. The ground-level service areas have heavy brick piers to support the porches, with an archway carrying the central projecting portico on paired Tuscan columns. A divided staircase rises to each side of the portico. The porch wraps the front and sides of the house, and all rooms have access to the porch through tall windows.
