Four of the remaining buildings on the west side of the Public Square are by Rulfs. Built over a number of years, there is no unifying scheme, except that two-story buildings anchor the corners. The Hoya Building at 112 S. Pecan executed in red and buff brick possessed the most richly detailed ornament of any in Rulfs’s career. The second floor of the building’s side wall displays what the front had been like, with dentiled stringcourses, segmental-arched windows with projecting over-arches, and corbeled brick under the cornice. Over the years, the facade was stripped and covered with stucco. A renovation completed in 2014 re-created in stucco the raised courses, arched parapet, and corner pilasters. The one-story building (1900) to the north has fine brick detailing. The buildings were commissioned by merchant Fritz Hoya. On the north corner at 124 E. Main is Rulfs’s Wettermark Bank Building (1896) with a chamfered corner entrance. The plain two-story red brick building has lost its pressed metal details.
