This compound represents transition in the architecture of San Ygnacio with wraparound porches, pine floors, and gabled ends. The sandstone material, however, sets the 1898 corner store and adjacent dwelling of 1900 within the architectural traditions of the border. The banqueta at the perimeter base of the store may well be the best-preserved example of this traditional public walkway along the entire north bank of the Rio Grande. In the 1980s, the complex was admirably rehabilitated by the River Pierce Foundation with the addition of a courtyard centered around the historic water well.
