This two-and-one-half-story Federal house has unusually impressive features for its rural location: a hipped roof with paneled monitor; a recessed fanlighted and side-lighted door set into recess, framed by a rusticated arch; corner quoining; and the commanding spread of its five windows, almost equally spaced across its front. The unusual depth of the house permits four similarly spaced windows along the sides. Interior chimneys flank the monitor. James Aldrich, for whom it apparently was built, served for a period in the state senate. Another house, the S. P. Taylor House ( SC25), virtually identical with this, is believed to have been erected by a Providence builder for himself as a country retreat. The houses are surely related. The Aldrich-Grant House is now owned by the Episcopal Diocese of Rhode Island.
