1900–1901, Kinney and Detweiler. North side of 4th St. between 2nd Ave. W. and 3rd Ave. W.

The Minneapolis architects Kinney and Detweiler provided Clay County with a highly inventive interpretation of the usual Beaux-Arts Classical scheme. The red brick and sandstone walls give a human scale and warmth to the building. This quality is reinforced by the open square tower surmounted by a small-scale drum and dome. In contrast, the two-story entrance portico with its large polished Corinthian columns seems formal and distant.
