This area, with its visitors' quarters, kitchen, and visitation pavilion, was originally fenced. Visitors to Kalaupapa were confined to this compound to which patients were denied access. The only contact between patients and visitors transpired at the modest, hipped-roof visitation pavilion. A table with wood benches runs the entire length of the pavilion, and originally a glass, later a screen, partition separated the two sides of the table to prevent visitors and patients from touching each other. The visitors' quarters feature a screened lanai which runs the length of the L-shaped building. The lanai provides access to the seven bedrooms.
