Kanaana Hou Church

By 1879 the Congregational Church had built a church on the Kalaupapa side of the peninsula. Initially named Siloama Hou, Hale Aloha (“New Siloama, Beloved House”), it was later renamed Kanaana (“Canaan”), Abraham's promised land of milk and honey. The present building, Kanaana Hou (“New Canaan”), was dedicated in 1915. It is nicely proportioned and detailed, marked by a corner tower entrance, large Gothic-arched windows, and bracketing. Sam Kaaumoana, choir master of Honolulu's Kaumakapili Church, and his crew of carpenters and painters built this bungalow-styled church.
