During Cripple Creek's heyday, the Sisters of Mercy opened this hilltop hospital, built in the Italian Villa Style of red brick with stone trim and a two-story, columned entry porch. One of the sisters is said to have directed construction of the three-and-one-half-story building, which incorporated steam heat, electricity, and a surgery department. One of the twenty-six hospital rooms was elegantly furnished by mine owner Albert E. Carlton for his employees. After the nuns left in 1925, several doctors operated this as a private hospital until 1960, then sold it to the county for $1. In the 1980s it became the St. Nicholas Hotel, with a Celtic cross still atop the roof-top cupola.
