Danforth Chapel

1954, James M. Hunter. Southwest corner of W. Laurel and S. Howes sts. on The Oval

High walls of thin-coursed rough sandstone and an east wall of opaque glass in a wooden screen stretch from a flagstone floor to exposed ceiling beams on the interior of the Danforth Chapel. A cantilevered altar of black marble and full-height stained glass panels create ascetic simplicity. Double doors beneath a pergola are of hammered bronze with bas-relief angels wearing jeweled halos. A freeform sandstone wall holds back the hillside on the east, defining a small meditation garden.
