Unique Theater (Salida Opera House)
Window trim still shadows this stuccoed facade, which hides the once grandiose arched entrance and third-story stained glass windows of the opera house. The second story had fanlighted windows in the central and side bays. The massive, metal-bracketed cornice with a raised central pediment remains a reminder of the elegant detailing smothered under stucco. After the original wooden opera house burned in 1888, townsfolk subscribed $30,000 for this proof of Salida's sophistication. It has been converted to a movie house with a typical marquee on a facade begging for restoration.
