A log cabin on the banks of Gold Creek, on the west side of the highway, may have been built by the Alaska Road Commission as a shelter cabin. The cabin, measuring approximately 11 feet by 14 feet, is constructed of round logs, saddle notched at the corners. The gable roof, of sod on poles, has purlins but no ridgepole. A gap in the roof that is the length of the structure indicates where the ridgepole would have been; the eave poles, which usually held the ends of the roof poles, have also been removed. The cabin has sunk about 1½ feet into the ground due to permafrost, resulting in a short doorway.
