Initially named Hockley City, the town was renamed in 1922 to acknowledge the prevailing topography. It was laid out in 1914 by C. W. Post, founder of Post Cereals, who also founded the town of Post, seventy miles to the southeast. Levelland became the seat of Hockley County in 1921 and received service on the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in 1925. The first meeting of the county commissioners was held on the public square site in a Cadillac automobile, probably the only shelter and seating available. The square is framed by commercial buildings on all sides.
