Settlement at Channing began in 1888 as the Fort Worth and Denver City Railway (FW&DC) built through Hartley County, and Channing became the general headquarters for the XIT Ranch, with ranch warehouses, two lumberyards, two general stores, a school, and a grocery store. Following liquidation of the ranchlands after 1911, Channing continued as a shipping and supply point for area ranches and as the county seat of Hartley County.
