Surrounded by the grazing pastures of La Parra Ranch established by Mifflin Kenedy, Captain King's partner, Sarita connects the countywide ranch to the outside world. Together with the Kings, the Kenedy family donated right-of-way to the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway, thus ensuring a stop on the line near their ranch headquarters.
Named after Kenedy's granddaughter, Sarita was laid out by the Kenedy Town and Improvement Company in 1907. The fifty-six-block plat, diagonally cut from north to south by the railroad line, appeared to be a far more ambitious endeavor at its founding when compared to its current size. Sarita suffered severe hurricane damage in 1916 and never recovered, especially after the departure of many of its midwestern residents. Today, with a barely legible city grid and a population totaling only in the hundreds, Sarita continues as the quintessential ranch town, serving as residential quarters for Kenedeños, or Kenedy Ranch employees.
