Named for a Virginian who explored nearby Cumberland Gap, this is the largest school in Lee County and also the most architecturally distinguished. The original building consisted of eleven bays and a gabled entrance pavilion highlighted by brick quoins and a Palladian window above a recessed entrance. In 1971 a three-bay addition was constructed at the east end of the building as well as a large addition to the west, which doubled the size of the school. The additions, designed by a Johnson City, Tennessee, firm, so closely resemble the original building that it is difficult to determine which section preceded the other.
