Formerly home to local publisher W. A. Sowers, owner of the Floyd Press, this two-story office building is the finest of several downtown structures built with soapstone blocks cut to the size of standard bricks. The variably blonde color of the soapstone immediately distinguishes these buildings from their masonry kin, but otherwise soapstone construction is typical of the period and this building features quoins, a corbeled cornice suggesting modillions, and lattice-patterned detailing on the facade. A modern porch and balcony, a reconstruction based on historic photos, shelters the three front entrances, each topped by a transom.
