The only African American Episcopal congregation in the city constructed this building about 1870. When it was remodeled about twenty years later, the architect chose as the basis of the design H. H. Richardson's Allegheny Episcopal Church, Pittsburgh (1886). Essentially a rectangular box with a steep roof, the building has round-arched openings in light-colored sandstone set off by red brick.
