A stunning castle that well illustrates the impact of Sir Walter Scott's romantic novels in the South before the Civil War, Melrose was constructed for Dr. James H. Murray and Edward Murray. Although Holtzclaw, a Fauquier County builder, is given credit for the house, the designs probably came from a big-city architect. In the twentieth century the house inspired Mary Roberts Rinehart's The Circular Staircase.
