Fielding Lewis Store

This brick store stands between Kenmore and the Rappahannock River, on land owned by Fielding Lewis before the Revolution. Although popularly associated with Lewis, it was probably built for William Stone soon after 1792, when it appeared on a tax list. Its brick walls with sandstone quoins seem to have been raised from one to two stories after an 1807 fire, and existing woodwork is in the neoclassical style of this later period. The shop at the front faced Caroline Street, and the office was at the rear, with its own exterior doorway. The building is owned by Historic Fredericksburg and awaits restoration.
