Flush with revenue from the oil boom, Kilgore established a junior college in 1935, assisted with funding from the PWA. The modern classic Administration Building, by Henry T. Phelps, sits astride the axis of a formal Beaux-Arts-inspired campus plan. A central two-story block with vertically stacked windows and recessed spandrels conveys a temple aspect, flanked by projecting single story wings. Phelps’s earlier work in Spanish, Mission, and classical styles followed national trends, as does this Moderne design.
