As early as 1923, Carlander showed a precocious talent for abstraction. This modest courthouse is vaguely classical, but it avoids literal historic details by blending Prairie Style elements with the kind of austere modern classicism popular from the late 1920s.

Farther west on W. Main Street, at number 615, is C. W. Post’s former house (1912). The elaborate bungalow is sumptuously furnished with solid oak doors, redwood floors, and leather wall covering. It is now the Hudman Funeral Home.
