In one of the few Gothic Revival houses in Texas, the influence of Andrew Jackson Downing’s “Rural Gothic Style” is evident in the extremely steep roof pitches, the tall, central gable, and steep-roofed dormers. The center-hall, L-plan house was built by German-born Otto Glosnop, who arrived in the area with the federal army of occupation. In 1877, the house was sold to the Burdette family. Mrs. Burdette, known as “Miss Belle,” was a co-founder of Carr-Burdette Women’s College in Sherman and a nationally known writer. The house is now owned by the Red River Historical Society. The Cowboy/Lawmen Hall of Fame moved into the house in 2004 and the Farmer/Stockman Hall of Fame in 2005.
