This district, the southern half of the original Overton Addition, located west of downtown Lubbock and extending to the Texas Tech campus, was developed by physician Marvin C. Overton, who platted the 640-acre addition in 1907 and promoted the planting of street trees. City-installed Thurber brick paving from the 1920s remains on Broadway and other streets. The city annexed the Overton Addition in the 1920s and extended city services, attracting a middle-class population of Texas Tech faculty, professionals, and business people. Because the Addition did not have restrictive covenants, institutional and commercial uses were drawn to Broadway, Avenue Q, and other busy streets within it.
