When it opened in 1938, the Cactus Theater was one of eight motion picture houses in Lubbock. It is the only one surviving today. Although it closed as a movie theater in 1958, the Cactus reopened in 1995 as a live performance and classic film house. Discreetly detailed, the brick facade is enlivened by a projecting marquee for which one hundred feet of neon lighting has been reconstructed.
The 1800 block of Buddy Holly Avenue where the Cactus is located is the epicenter of Lubbock’s live music scene and is known as the Depot District. The Club Klusoz (M-System No. 2) of 1930 at 1802 Buddy Holly is a brick-faced, tile-hooded storefront in the Lubbock-Texas Tech Spanish style.
