Hovering in an open field, this UFO-like Futuro house is a surreal presence in a roadside landscape of metal buildings and modular homes along this highway. The prototype was designed in the late 1960s by Finnish architect Matti Suuorinen as a prefabricated ski cabin. The 27-foot diameter structure was manufactured in 16 fiberglass sections with an exterior of harvest gold (a color still visible on the underside of the Futuro). The womb-like interior featured a central circular fireplace, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom. Oval windows are placed above the horizontal centerline of the circular craft. American Futuros were manufactured in Philadelphia. Roughly 60 survive worldwide, with 19 in the United States.
