Matthew Cartwright’s brother-in-law, state senator R. A. Warren, who owned land in the Spindletop oil field, built this imposing house. Flanders’s design demonstrates his predilection for incorporating such Prairie Style detailing as square and horizontal windows. The house is dominated by a massive portico entrance with two pairs of Ionic columns built of stone with terra-cotta trim. An extension of the attic floor over the portico creates a heavy appearance. The house is set well back from the street behind a broad lawn, which adds to its commanding presence.
