The public square occupies the high point in the town. This three-story courthouse, the county’s third, originally was a three-story red brick Second Empire design, with a central clock tower. The courthouse was drastically altered in the 1930s with WPA funding to its present rather severe and angular appearance and covered in stucco. The segmental-arched windows remain, but a divided stair was added to the front, changing the original entrance from the ground floor to the second. Possible reconstruction of the courthouse to its 1892 appearance continues to be a contentious issue (and cost) within the Texas Historic Courthouse Preservation Program.
