Alamo Village was built by James T. “Happy” Shahan as a set for John Wayne’s 1960 film The Alamo. In addition to re-creating the entire compound of Mission San Antonio de Valero, the area includes a “western” town where numerous other films have been made. Unlike most movie sets that are merely facades, the structures in Alamo Village are complete buildings with walls and roofs. It was a tourist attraction for many years but closed in 2009 with the death of Shahan’s wife. A new owner is hoping to raise funds to reopen the attraction.
