The rock-faced brown sandstone jail accommodated the sheriff’s family on the first floor, while second and third floors contained cells and a gallows (never used). Over eight thousand prisoners were held here over the years until a new jail was built in 1974. The west facade has two short towers with a sturdy porch with square piers between, something of a miniature version of the courthouse (AQ1). A similar porch is on the south side. Red barrel-tile roofs have exposed rafter tails.
