Dr. Thomas R. Cocke built this house for his niece and her husband, a pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, in what in the 1880s were still referred to as the northern suburbs of Victoria. It was acquired in 1871 by lawyer William L. Callender. A raised I-house, the house possesses a distinctive veranda with thick square columns linked by segmental wood arches. The columns support a low-pitched roof that blocks the view of second-floor windows. Different types of windows and the Georgian Revival front doorway suggest a complicated building history.
