The San Antonio firm virtually surrounded the original building with an L-shaped addition fronted by a collage of metal screens and colorful, textural concrete tilt-wall panels, which are cast horizontally and then lifted, or tilted, vertically into place. The courtyard created between the old and the new aptly provides an outdoor exhibit space for interpretation of the Rio Grande.

The northern Nolana Loop now serves as McAllen's new commercial corridor, which includes the Texas State Bank (1998), at 3900 N. 10th Street, a twelve-story high-rise with fan-shaped plan by Arthur M. Gensler and Associates of Houston.
