The Houston-born Barcelona architect Pia Wortham and her husband, Joan Callis, designed this house and studio for an artist. Its fractured plan, looking like the slats of a broken fan, displays the influence of Wortham and Callis's mentor, Enric Miralles. The house and studio are located in Norhill, a subdivision platted in 1920 by brothers Will C. and Mike Hogg and their partner Henry W. Stude. An indication of Will Hogg's progressive interest in city planning is Norhill's plan. The main street, Norhill Street, is outfitted with wide, two-block-long esplanades that occur at four-block intervals, equipping the neighborhood, which was marketed to a lower-middle-income clientele, with a sequence of linear parks culminating in Stude Park on the south, on the banks of White Oak Bayou.
